ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES

: FRIEND OR FOE TO OUR SKIN?

It has been a long week and that big glass of Moscato wine is calling to you. Do you want to reach for it?

AMANDA LORGE on DECEMBER 29, 2019

It has been a long week and that big glass of Moscato wine is calling to you. Do you want to reach for it? In recent studies, red wine has been said to be good for your heart, in moderation. Just to be clear here, I am referring to drinking alcohol, not using it as an ingredient in your skincare products. Is ingesting any type of alcohol good for your skin? Turns out – no.

LOSS OF WATER

One of the reasons alcohol is not good for your skin is that it is a diuretic. A diuretic increases the production of urine in your body and dehydrates you. When your body is dehydrated, your skin becomes dryer and your fine lines will begin to show. While the conversations you have in the ladies’ room on a night out are supportive and stimulating, you need to decide for yourself if drinking is worth losing the bounciness you see in your face.

LEAVE THE PUFF TO THE FISH

Another reason that alcohol is no good for your skin? Looking puffy and bloated. That is not a good look on any human. In addition to the puffiness, alcohol can increase the inflammation in your skin caused by dilated blood vessels. This can lead to the worsening of acne and make chronic problems such as rosacea worse.

NOT READY TO GO DRY?

Not ready to give up a night out? Stick to drinks with less sugar in them. The sugar in wine and sweet mixers can make post-drinking problems even worse. Alternate drinks and water. This will not only help with hydration but cut down on the hangover…and those look good on no one.

We all overdo it from time to time. When you do, there are a few things you can do to make your skin bounce back faster. First, don’t forget to take your makeup off after a night out. If you did forget, make sure you double cleanse to get rid of all the smoke, sweat and melted makeup from the night before. Follow up with a sheet mask (or two) to help your skin topically regain some of the moisture that was lost with the alcohol. Above all, rehydrate yourself with WATER. The best thing you can do for your skin after a night out is to drink water. Your skin will thank you!
